Scandlines Hybrid Ferry to Get Norsepower s Rotor Sail
Ferry operator Scandlines has signed an agreement with Norsepower to install the auxiliary wind propulsion system Rotor Sail Solution onboard the M/V Copenhagen, a hybrid passenger ferry.
Operating between Rostock in Germany and Gedser in Denmark, the M/V Copenhagen combines diesel and battery power.
With the addition of Norsepower s technology, the ferry will further reduce its emissions.
As informed, preparations for the retrofit will take place in November 2019 with the installation scheduled for Q2 2020. M/V Copenhagen is set to be retrofitted with one large-sized Norsepower Rotor Sail unit that is 30 meters in height and 5 meters in diameter.
The Norsepower Rotor Sail Solution is a modernised version of the Flettner rotor- a spinning cylinder that uses the Magnus effect to harness wind power to thrust a ship. It is the first data-verified and commercially operational auxiliary wind propulsion technology for the global maritime industry.
When wind conditions are favorable, it enables the electric propulsion thrusters and center propel to be throttled back, reducing emissions - while providing the power needed to maintain speed and voyage time. Because it generates supplementary thrust from wind, the solution is compatible with all other emissions saving technologies.
The route between Gedser to the north and Rostock to the south is almost perpendicular to the prevailing wind from the west, giving Scandlines favorable conditions for using Rotor Sails on the ferry crossing.
"By installing a Rotor Sail, we can reduce CO2 emissions on the Rostock-Gedser route by four to five per cent," Soren Poulsgaard Jensen, Scandlines CEO, commented.
German Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (NABU) welcomed Scandlines decision to further reduce CO2 emissions.
"NABU welcomes Scandlines various efforts towards sustainable shipping. With rotors besides hybrid drives, the company sets new standards in terms of integrating different technical solutions to mitigate especially climate and air pollution emissions. To reach the Paris climate goals, more corporate responsibility by other shipping companies is needed," Malte Siegert, Head of Environmental Policy at NABU, said.
Commenting on the deal, Tuomas Riski, CEO of Norsepower said: "We are proud to be partnering with Scandlines as we work towards a modern era of auxiliary wind propulsion for the global maritime fleet, while supporting shipping s transition to a low-carbon future."
Since 2013, Scandlines has invested more than EUR 300 million (about USD 335 million) in building and retrofitting ferries from conventional diesel-driven to hybrid ferries. With more than 43,000 departures on eight ferries, Scandlines transported 7.4 million passengers, 1.8 million cars and more than 700,000 freight units and 36,000 busses on the routes Puttgarden-Rodby and Rostock-Gedser in 2018.

Wilhelmsen Nabs Stove Shipping Supramax Contract
Oslo-based bulker owner Stove Shipping has selected Norway’s Wilhelmsen Ship Management as the technical manager for two 2016-built Supramaxes.
The Stove Friend and Stove Tide are the newest additions to the Stove fleet built by Tsuneishi shipbuilding.
Eastern Bulk Carriers will be the commercial manager of both vessels, which will be technically managed by WSM in Singapore.
In addition to the two new ships, Stove Shipping has further three Supramaxes, built between 2007 and 2013, in its fleet.
"Stove Shipping and WSM have worked hand in hand like partners for the past 10 years. We have been through the market volatilities together and as the market improves, we hope to ride this momentum together," Carl Schou, CEO and President of Wilhelmsen Ship Management, said.
Besides the two Supramaxes from Stove, WSM said it has secured more than 40 new vessels into technical management so far this year. While expanding the managed bulk carrier fleet, the company said it was also expanding the managed gas fleet.

Yang Ming Posts Loss Despite Growing Revenues
Driven by market challenges in container shipping, Taiwanese shipping company Yang Ming Marine Transport Corporation closed the first half of this year with a net loss.
The company suffered a net loss of TWD 1.95 billion (USD 62.94 million), compared to a net loss of TWD 5.76 billion seen in the corresponding period last year.
Net loss for the second quarter of 2019 stood at TWD 1.27 billion, against a net loss of TWD 3.81 billion posted in Q2 2018.
On the other hand, Yang Ming s consolidated revenues rose by 16.77% year on year to TWD 75.48 billion in H1 2019 and by 20.24% to TWD 40.4 billion in Q2 2019.
What is more, the company s container volumes increased by 5% year on year to 2.64 million TEUs in the first half of this year and also by 5% to 1.35 million TEUs in the second quarter.
As explained, the results were affected by the current market oversupply and the weaker-than-expected market demand due to the ongoing China-US trade tensions.
In addition, the slight rise in bunker fuel prices affected Yang Ming s operating costs.
Furthermore, the exercise of the new IFRS 16 accounting standard had a negatively impact on Yang Ming s half-year profitability by around TWD 0.6 billion (USD 19.37 million). Consequently, the company’s operating performance was insufficient to yield profits in the first half of 2019, Yang Ming noted.
Nevertheless, Yang Ming said has reduced its financial losses significantly by 66.22% as compared to the previous year, largely due to the result of its strategies implementation and cost control.
The company has begun since the last year the deployment of its new eco-type containerships while returning some of its higher cost chartered vessels.
Established in 1972, Yang Ming currently operates a fleet of 101 vessels with an operating capacity of 7.74 million dwt or 673,000 TEUs.

New LNG Terminal at Port of Newcastle Declared "Critical"
The New South Wales Government has expressed its support for a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at the Port of Newcastle.
The Newcastle GasDock project, with an estimated direct onshore investment of up to AUD 250 million (USD 169.9 million) at the port, received Critical State Significant Infrastructure (CSSI) status from NSW Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, the Hon Rob Stokes MP.
"The terminal could be operational by 2022-23 and provide supply for gas-fired power stations, helping to manage energy security during the period in which the Liddell power station is scheduled to close," Acting Premier, John Barilaro, said.
Barilaro added that the proposal for the AUD 589 million gas import terminal at Kooragang Island in the Port of Newcastle would include a connecting pipeline to the existing NSW gas supply network.
Despite being declared critical , the terminal will still be subject to detailed community consultation and a full and thorough environmental assessment.
The proponent, Newcastle GasDock Company (NGDC), will now need to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for the project, which will go on public exhibition for community feedback.

New Project to Reduce Bottlenecks for Container Shipments at Montreal Port
The Government of Canada has announced a new investment of CAD 18.5 million (about USD 14 million) for a project to increase transport efficiency, capacity, and security by reducing waiting times and bottlenecks for container movements at the Port of Montreal.
"Our government is investing in the Port of Montreal s physical and digital infrastructure to stimulate economic growth … and ensure that Canada s transportation networks remain competitive and efficient," Marc Garneau, Minister of Transport, commented.
"The investment at the port will also help reduce congestion and truck traffic in and around its various terminals," he added.
The project consists of an IT system for truck logistics that allows drivers to register for access to the port s terminals, thus increasing the flow of traffic; building a railway bridge outside the truck entrance to improve truck traffic at the port; deploying a series of electronic signs on the port lands that will provide real-time information for truck drivers; and developing an intelligent communications network to reduce truck traffic in the vicinity of the port.
Last year, the Port of Montreal also joined the TradeLens solution, continuing its development strategy geared to innovation and the use of advanced technology. Jointly developed by Maersk and IBM, TradeLens aims to bring the shipping industry into the digital age through a secure interface exclusively dedicated to freight transport.
As explained, the government is supporting infrastructure projects that contribute most to Canada s success in international trade. Trade diversification is seen as a key component of the National Trade Corridors Fund, through projects that improve the performance of the transportation system to increase the value and volume of goods exported from Canada to overseas markets; and generate new overseas trade as a result of the investment.
Minister Garneau also announced CAD 600,000 in funding for the University of Montreal to assess the impacts of climate change on the Port of Montreal s infrastructure and determine its resilience to the effects of climate change.
Operated by the Montreal Port Authority (MPA), the Port of Montreal is the second-largest port in Canada and a diversified transshipment center that handles all types of goods - containerized and non-containerized cargo, liquid bulk and dry bulk. The MPA also operates a cruise terminal and a port center.

DHT Holdings Inks Charter for Scrubber-Fitted VLCC
Bermuda-incorporated tanker owner and operator DHT Holdings has entered into a time charter for one of its scrubber-fitted very large crude carriers (VLCCs).
The deal was signed for a period of three years with an undisclosed refining company.
Under the contract, the company s 2012-built VLCC would start the employment once it completed its scrubber retrofitting works in the fourth quarter this year.
DHT Holdings said that the time charter has a base rate of USD 30,000 per day with all earnings up to USD 37,500 to the company following a profit sharing structure that includes scrubber economics for earnings in excess to be shared between the customer and DHT.
By 2020, the company plans to have 18 of its 27 very large crude carriers (VLCCs), the third of DHT Holdings fleet, fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems (EGCS). The number comprises of two newbuildings and 16 retrofits, all of which would be fitted with open-loop systems.
DHT Holdings earlier said that the systems can be converted into hybrid systems, however, "we do not expect this to be a likely scenario."

Kalmar, part of Cargotec, has concluded an agreement to supply comprehensive preventive and corrective maintenance services to Operaciones Portuarias Canarias S.A. (OPCSA) at their Las Palmas container terminal. The order, which comprises a Kalmar Complete Care service contract covering the terminal s ship-to-shore (STS) and rubber-tyred gantry (RTG) cranes, was booked in Cargotec s 2019 Q3 order intake with the contract coming into effect at the start of Q1 2020.

Malaysia to develop $480 million oil storage, ship refueling site in south
Malaysia on Tuesday said the Johor Port Authority was working to develop a 2 billion ringgit ($477 million) oil storage and ship refueling site in the country s south.
That marks the latest step in a push to turn Malaysia’s southern peninsular state of Johor into an oil and gas hub that could one day rival Singapore, currently Asia s main oil centre.

MSC Ship Fined for Violating Speed Limit in Canada
Transport Canada has issued a CAD 12,000 (about USD 9,000) penalty to a containership operated by Swiss Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and five other fines to vessels for non-compliance with the temporary mandatory slow down in the Gulf of St. Lawrence.
Specifically, the Panamax boxship MSC Diego was fined for not respecting measures introduced by the Government of Canada to protect endangered whales in Canadian waters.

Fire aboard APL Containership Damages Six Boxes
Half a dozen containers have been damaged in a fire aboard the 10,106 TEU containership APL Le Havre off the coast of Gujarat, India.
According to media reports, citing the Indian Coast Guard, the fire broke out in the ship s aft section near the accommodation block.
